Withings beats Apple Watch with first ECG smartwatch in Australia

Withings – a company that’s earned a reputation for creating stylish smartwatches with a clear health focus – has announced the Australian availability of its ScanWatch. It's the first smartwatch to market here that includes clinically-approved ECG functionality.

While other smartwatches can monitor and record your heart rate, only the Withings ScanWatch has been approved by the Australian Government's Therapeutic Goods Administration as a medical device. It's beaten Apple, Fitbit, Garmin and all the other players that offer similar wearables with ECG hardware available on board but unfortunately aren't approved for use Down Under.

This will be of particular interest to the estimated 475,000 Australians that suffer from atrial fibrillation (Afib), which is an irregular heartbeat that increases risk of stroke or heart attack. A great many people will be unaware they might have this condition, and early detection via a product like this could be a critical element that leads to treatment, and a long and healthy life.

If the ScanWatch detects an irregular heartbeat it will alert the user and recommend that it record an ECG. This information is then displayed in the app, which includes in-depth diagnostic information and recommendations – although in cases like this it's best to see your GP immediately.

The ScanWatch also includes related heart monitoring functionality that can detect breathing disturbances during sleep, which could be related to sleep apnoea, as well as measuring oxygen saturation. An oxygen saturation reading can be run any time, taking about 30 seconds to complete.

Beyond this, the ScanWatch includes all the usual fitness-oriented smart watch features, including sleep monitoring and 24/7 activity tracking with various fitness and workout programs to follow. The ScanWatch is water resistant up to 50m, and has a claimed battery life of up to 30 days.

The Withings ScanWatch will be available exclusively in JB Hi-Fi from November 9. It’s available in 38mm (AUD$479) and 42mm (AUD$499) sizes, with black or white faces paired with a standard silicone band, although a variety of optional bands will also be available.

Internet Archive adds fact checks to explain web page takedowns

The Internet Archive has announced that it will begin adding fact checks as well as context to pages in its Wayback Machine in order to explain why they were removed.

For those unfamiliar, the nonprofit's Wayback Machine is a digital archive of the internet and the pages that make it up. Since the service's launch in 2001, over 463bn pages have been added to the archive so that users can go back and see how popular sites used to look in the past.

The Internet Archive's goal is to preserve our digital history though it also recognizes that providing access to false and misleading information from a wide variety of sources that have since been removed from the internet can have negative effects.

Now by providing links to contextual information, the nonprofit hopes it can help its users better understand the content they're reading when looking at archived pages in the Wayback Machine.

Stopping the spread of disinformation

In a blog post announcing its decision to add fact checks to the Wayback Machine's content, the Internet Archive also provided several examples of how its platform has been used to spread disinformation in the past.

For instance, it discovered that a webpage in its archive was part of a disinformation campaign based on a report from researchers from Graphika. Now when you visit that site on the Wayback Machine, you'll see a yellow banner at the top of the page which reads: “This is an archived web page that was included in a report titled "Secondary Infektion". Here is a link to it on the Live Web”.

Another example provided by the Internet Archive deals with a Medium post that was later removed based on a violation of Medium's Covid-19 content policy. The archived copy of the post now includes a fact check notice at the top of the page that explains that: “In most instances, the archiving of a page is an automated process. The inclusion of a page in the Wayback Machine should not be seen as an endorsement of its content in any way.”

Understanding why a page was removed from the web can give future readers better context and the fact check banners also help distance the Internet Archive from the content found on archived pages.

Moving beyond passwords and 2FA

Since the beginning of IT the humble combination of a username and password have secured our access to information. In today’s digital world this model is still the norm for both consumers and employees logging in to websites, applications, VPNs and cloud services. But it’s time for an urgent rethink because the model is broken.

Contrary to popular belief, the problem isn’t really about hackers brute force attacks to crack passwords, although this does happen. The real issue is the number and frequency of data breaches where user credentials are leaked and then made available for sale on the dark web. In fact, according to Verizon’s latest breach report, 80% of hacks today aren’t really hacks but bad actors simply logging in with valid user credentials they’ve obtained elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter how well we secure the pipes with strong encryption or how effective a Security Operations Centre (SOC) is, if someone can easily obtain credentials and log-in ‘legitimately’ our best efforts have gone to waste. Passwords are also the root cause of a terrible and stressful user experience, which might go some way to explaining why younger generations appear to have given up on applying them properly.

Password habits are getting worse, not better

You might imagine that digital natives, those younger generations born into a connected world, are more able to protect themselves online. Unfortunately, new research we commissioned confirms that younger generations have significantly riskier password habits than their parents, with 24% of those aged between 24 and 38 (Millennials) using the same password for all their accounts, compared to just 2% of baby boomers.

With 14% of younger generations reporting they have never changed their password it’s easy to see how the bad guys can use credentials stolen from one place to log-in somewhere else. Perhaps worse still it is now common for young people (62%) to voluntarily share credentials for services like Netflix with friends and family, perhaps sending them using unencrypted email or messaging accounts.

The purpose of this research isn’t to bash the young but rather to highlight that the way we ask people to authenticate today is too cumbersome for users and is in fact the root cause of the booming identity theft industry. It is telling that analysts from Gartner said in a recent report “Data breaches of personally identifiable information (PII) are rendering checking of static identity data (usernames and passwords) obsolete”.

2FA to the rescue?

The logical response over the last few years has been to layer additional ‘factors’ on top of the password. By asking people to validate their identity based on ‘something they have’, by entering a one-time passcode sent to their mobile phone or email, we can make life much harder for hackers.

Two-factor authentication or ‘2FA’ has grown in popularity and is now an integral aspect of the Strong Customer Authentication requirements for e-Commerce payments. The majority of large companies also ask employees to use 2FA when logging-in.

Unfortunately this makes a poor experience even worse as it really doesn’t make sense for someone’s identity to be tied to their device. What happens if you’re trying to log in to a work application to make a deadline while you’re out on the road and your phone runs out of battery? Or you use an authenticator app and then you lose your phone? Perhaps this is why only 25% of respondents to our survey said they regularly enable 2FA when it’s an option.

There are also question marks about how much longer 2FA will hamper the bad guys with a number of recent phishing attacks evolving to trick users into voluntarily disabling their 2FA protection. The problems with identity require root and branch reform, 2FA is a nice try but we need to be far more ambitious.

Is Multi-Factor biometrics the answer?

A multi-factor authentication approach based on biometrics has the potential to deliver a step-change in security and the user’s experience. In a world where employees are logging on across public networks, from anywhere, we can no longer offer them a ‘perimeter’. Instead we must invest in modern authentication that helps users to securely and easily access services whenever and wherever they want.

Rather than asking users to remember a password we store their biometric identifiers, a voice and face print, so we can authenticate against those across any device they’re logging in from. We combine the biometric check with additional ‘silent’ factors that increase security still further. So from a user’s perspective all they need to do is present their face and they’re in.

With underlying protocols like OpenID Connect, website, application or cloud service providers can easily allow an identity provider to add biometric authentication on top of their systems. For the user this makes their biometric identity widely interoperable and behind the scenes it works in exactly the same way as logging-in with Facebook or Google.

With a well-engineered biometric authentication service we can also decouple someone’s identity from their device. We often describe this as ‘the Netflix effect’, because the biometric checking happens in the cloud rather than locally on a device a user can move between their laptop, phone or a third-party device and still log-on using their face.

People have understood biometrics hold the answer to more secure authentication for a number of years but it’s been hard for all but the largest companies to deploy the technology. But the economics and complexity are improving and we believe we’re a great example.

If we’re serious about tackling identity theft and data breaches then we must transition away from usernames and passwords because they’re the reason that people need to store their personally identifiable information with lots of organisations. It’s that personal information that’s lost and which is then used to perpetrate more hacks.

Windows 10 zero-day could allow hackers to seize control of your computer

A security bug has been discovered that affects every version of the Windows operating system, from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The vulnerability can be found within the Windows Kernel Cryptography Driver and enables attackers to gain admin-level control of a victim’s computer.

The flaw was discovered by Google’s Project Zero security team, which subsequently notified Microsoft. The Redmond-based firm was given seven days to patch the bug before Google published further details – a task that proved beyond the company.

Although the ramifications of the security flaw sound scary, Microsoft is urging caution for the time being. The technology giant has claimed that any threat is limited, with no evidence of widespread exploits taking place. As of yet, there is also no indication that attackers are using the exploit to target the US presidential election.

A patch is coming

One of the reasons why Microsoft can be so calm regarding the vulnerability (tracked as CVE-2020-17087) is that in order to be exploited, it requires another vulnerability, CVE-2020-15999. This earlier bug is browser-based and has already been patched. So, if your browser is up-to-date, you should be protected.

Microsoft has not commented on when a patch for the newly-discovered vulnerability is likely to be launched, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if it was packaged within the Patch Tuesday update set to be released on November 10. A Microsoft spokesperson told Forbes that "developing a security update is a balance between timeliness and quality,” which is why the Project Zero deadline was missed.

Any zero-day exploit is understandably a cause for concern but perhaps Microsoft is right not to be too panicked over this one. As long as Windows users make sure their browsers are updated, they’ll probably be fine until the patch arrives.

This WordPress update might have caused your website to go berserk

The WordPress development team inadvertently caused chaos for a number of website owners after a planned series of updates went wrong. The update, WordPress 5.5.2, was meant to patch critical security issues but also made it impossible to install WordPress on new sites that did not have a database connection configured.

The WordPress team pressed pause on any more updates but didn’t factor in the auto-update feature, which subsequently pushed an alpha version of the platform to users. The alpha release introduced new themes and a spam protection plugin. Users who do not delete them will have to keep them updated to ensure they don’t one day pose a security risk.

“While work was being done to prepare for WordPress 5.5.3, the release team attempted to make 5.5.2 unavailable for download on WordPress.org to limit the spread of the issue noted in the section above, as the error only affected fresh installations,” Jake Spurlock, Security Release Lead at WordPress, explained. “This action resulted in some installations being updated to a pre-release '5.5.3-alpha' version.”

A flawed update

The latest update, Version 5.5.3, fixes all the aforementioned problems, although WordPress users may have to carry out a manual update by visiting the platform dashboard and clicking “Update Now.”

WordPress users that had the alpha update forced upon them received a message that read: “BETA TESTERS: This site is set up to install updates of future beta versions automatically.” Apart from that, and the annoyance of having to delete unwanted themes, the update didn’t cause too much carnage.

However, the incident may have damaged user trust in WordPress and the auto-update process in particular. WordPress may need to put better policies in place to ensure that the update process can be stopped without causing unnecessary disruption.

Tipster Sudhanshu also mentioned that the Realme X7 Pro 5G with model no RMX2121 has obtained BIS certification and India launch might not be too far away. For those who are unaware, the Realme X7 series was unveiled in China back in September and they are powered by MediaTek Dimensity chipsets. Madhav Sheth mentioned the chipset in one of his tweets a couple of weeks ago.

MediaTek has revamped its complete chipset lineup in the past few months and the Dimesity series which brings 5G capabilities in lower price point has been in the spotlight. The Dimensity series consists of multiple chipsets in 1000, 800, 700, 600 series has for the most parts these were only limited to China. However, the chipset was finally made available outside of China a few weeks back starting with the US and it looks like the MediaTek Dimensity series will finally make its way to India as well.

The Realme X7 series consists of two devices - the Realme X7 Pro and Realme X7. These devices are powered by Dimensity 1000 Plus and Dimensity 800U respectively.

Realme X7 Pro

The Realme X7 Pro comes with a 6.55-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution. It is powered by MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 1000 Plus 5G chipset. It is an octa-core chipset with 2.6GHz max clock speed, based on the 7nm fabrication process. The device is available in three configurations with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

On for the optics, the Realme X7 Pro comes with a 64MP quad-camera stack. You get a primary 64MP Sony IMX 686 sensor with f/1.7 aperture. This is followed by an 8MP ultra-wide camera, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP retro portrait lens. On the front, there is a 32MP single punch-hole camera. On the inside, there is a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging support over Type-C port. To keep the thermals under check, the device also comes with vapour cooling.

It is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 800U chipset. It is also built on the 7nm fabrication process. The X7 comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel with 90Hz refresh rate. The device is packed with up to 8GB of memory and 128GB of internal storage. The optics are very similar to the Realme X7 Pro except for the 2MP retro portrait lenses on the Pro variant, you get a 2MP black and white portrait camera. Powering the device is a 4,300mAh battery with 65W fast charging support.

The Realme X7 Pro starts at CNY 2,199 which is roughly Rs 23,500 in China and the Realme X7 starts at CNY 1,799 (~Rs 19,500).

This is how WhatsApp's disappearing messages will work

WhatsApp has confirmed that it is indeed working on the much talked of 'disappearing message', which, when enabled, will make "new messages sent in individual or group chats disappear after seven days."

But, as it happens, it is still not available at a lay user level.

This feature is set to be rolled out on WhatsApp for web, Android, iOS, and KaiOS.

"If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven-day period, the message will disappear. However, the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened," the company said.

Users can turn disappearing messages on and off in individual chats. Of course, in a group chat, only the admins will get to use the feature.

"The most recent selection controls all messages in the chat. This setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat," WhatsApp explained.

But before you get carried away by the much-anticipated feature, it should be said that if a disappearing message is forwarded to another chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat.

Also, if a user has a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will figure in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.

WhatsApp cautioned that the feature be used only with trusted individuals. For it's still possible for someone to:

"Forward or take a screenshot of a disappearing message and save it before it disappears.

Copy and save content from the disappearing message before it disappears.

Take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device before it disappears."

WhatsApp also said that by default, media users receive in WhatsApp will be automatically downloaded to their photos. If disappearing messages are turned on, media sent in the chat will disappear, but will be saved on the phone if auto-download is on. Users can turn auto-download off in WhatsApp Settings > Data and Storage Usage, it added.

WhatsApp has not given any date for its rollout.

New budget Aussie telco in the works after Optus buys Amaysim for cool AU$250m

Optus has today announced a double-header in its bid to dominate the Australian mobile market, confirming that it will acquire Amaysim and also establish a new local Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) of its own, operating in the budget end of the market.

Amaysim is the fourth-largest mobile provider in Australia, and the largest when only considering MVNOs – a category which excludes Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone that have their own networks.

The news of the acquisition comes at the same time as Amaysim is moving to rebrand itself to celebrate 10 years of Australian operation as the “least complained about telco in Australia” (according to the most recent Telecommunications Complaints in Content report).

Specifics around what the rebrand entails are thin, but Amaysim is promising its customers “great value, more data for their buck, no clingy lock-in contracts, Optus 4G network, no tricky catches, and surprising delights when they least expect it”.

From this, we can likely expect the company to continue offering affordable SIM-only options with decent data inclusions, no lock-in contracts, and the occasional promotion for new and existing customers.

The other major news from Optus today is that the Aussie telco will be launching another network of its own called Gomo – a budget, digital-only network provider.

Optus’ parent company, Singtel, has already been offering Gomo in Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, but hopes to join in the success of other such telco imports as Circles.Life, which have brought incredibly competitive plans to Australia such as the following 100GB plan:

Optus also promises Gomo customers will have “full accessibility to its 4G coverage [...] and quickly growing 5G network”, which could represent an excellent budget alternative to getting directly connected to the Telstra or Optus next-gen networks.

No specific details around new Amaysim or Gomo plan pricing has been announced, but we expect more to be made available when Optus completes its acquisition.

Coles has partnered with Boost Mobile to offer a refurbished iPhone 7 (32GB) from its stores, and it’s launching at an introductory cost of just AU$259, before raising to a price of AU$299.

The handset comes unlocked, but it is bundled with a AU$10 Boost Mobile SIM so you can use it right out of the box. Boost Mobile’s AU$10 prepaid SIM uses the Telstra network and comes with 3GB of data and unlimited calls and texts to standard numbers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus vs Galaxy Tab S7: which Android tablet is best for you?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 series means serious business. Both the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus and Galaxy Tab S7 have a whole lot of power in them, and though the differences between them might seem negligible, they will be significant to some buyers.

That said, both of these tablets showcase the best of what Samsung has to offer, and if you’re in the market for an Android tablet that won’t quit on you, then either of these will do the job.

So if you’re having a bit of trouble trying to decide which Galaxy Tab S7 to buy, we’re here to help out. We’ve looked at all the features and specs of both tablets, as well as the price, design, and everything else that you may need to know before you buy.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus vs Galaxy Tab S7 price and availability

The standard Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 starts at $649.99 / £619 / AU$1,149, for which you get 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Opt for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus and the starting price goes up to $849.99 / £799 / AU$1,549 for the same RAM and storage combination.

In both cases that's for a Wi-Fi-only model, but you can also get cellular versions which push the price up, with both 4G and 5G models of both slates available. You can also get versions with 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage in some places - though not all models are available in all regions.

One place where you can get extra RAM and storage is the UAE, where you'll be looking at AED 3,599 for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus with an 8GB / 256GB combo, but no LTE.

Finally, the standard Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 costs AED 2,699 for the Wi-Fi only model, or you can get an LTE version for AED 2,999, and they both come with 128GB of storage.

The most obvious difference between the two tablets is the size of each. The Galaxy Tab S7 Plus measures 285 x 185 x 5.7mm, while the Galaxy Tab S7 comes in at 253.8 x 165.3 x 6.3mm. So as its name suggests, the Tab S7 Plus is larger - though it's also slightly thinner.

The larger screen size on the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus (more on which below) makes it slightly heavier as well, weighing in at 575g as opposed to the 498g of its smaller sibling.

Both come in a choice of three colors - Mystic Black, Mystic Bronze, and Mystic Silver.

They're both also very thin - though again the Tab S7 Plus is the thinner of the two, and both have an aluminum rear and frame.

This is the first major difference between the two tablets. The Galaxy Tab S7 Plus sports a 12.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1752 x 2800 pixels. Everything from images to video to text looks sharp and crisp, and the screen really is a delight to use.

For those who value screen brightness and clarity, there really is no other choice than opting for the far superior display on the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus.

On the Galaxy Tab S7, you’ll have to contend with a smaller, 11-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen, with a resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels. We don’t mind the slightly lower resolution much - in fact the two slates have a similar pixel density, but the quality of the screen is nowhere near as high as its AMOLED sibling.

Thankfully, both displays have a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and include HDR10+ support, so you still get a decent visual experience even if you skip the AMOLED screen.

Samsung has stuck exactly the same dual-lens camera setup on both of these tablets. Specifically there's a 13MP f/2.0 main snapper and a 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide one.

Both tablets also have an 8MP f/2.0 single-lens camera on the front. This unusually - and usefully - is positioned so that it's at the top of the screen when the tablet is held in landscape orientation.

Most tablets mimic phones by having the selfie camera at the top when the slate is held in portrait, but given that most people use a tablet in landscape orientation for video calls and the like, the position on these Samsung slates makes a lot more sense, as the lens is more in line with where you're looking, rather than being off to the side.

Beyond the camera hardware, both Galaxy Tab S7 models are also packed with camera modes, such Night mode, Pro Video mode, Live Focus (for portraits), and Single Take mode, which automatically takes numerous photos and short videos using all the lenses, so you're sure to end up with something good.

As for the battery, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus with a 10,090mAh one, while the Galaxy Tab S7 comes with a smaller 8,000mAh battery. However, the smaller screen size and the use of LCD rather than OLED means you'll get similar life from it as from the Tab S7 Plus.

Battery life will of course depend on your usage, as well as if you’ve got any other accessories connected to the tablet, such as the keyboard cover. But you should be able to get at least eight to ten hours of active usage from each before needing a recharge.

Both tablets are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, which is a beast at handling pretty much any app you can throw at it. You’ll also get the choice of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage, coupled with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, depending on regional availability.

You get the familiar Android 10, along with Samsung’s One UI 2.5 and access to the Google Play store in its entirety. A fingerprint sensor rests in the side-mounted power button on the Galaxy Tab S7, while on the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus it’s located under the display itself.

Both tablets come with an S Pen stylus, which magnetically attaches to the back near the camera bump to wirelessly charge. It can also be safely nestled away inside the Book Cover (sold separately), should you choose to keep it somewhere safe.

Pen accuracy for writing and sketching is very satisfactory, and you’ll soon forget that you’re actually writing on a tablet.

One area where the two slates tend to differ is in their connectivity. The Galaxy Tab S7 Plus offers 5G support as well, so if you have a compatible operator in your country, you can enjoy high speed data wherever coverage is available. On the Galaxy Tab S7 you’ll - in most cases - have to contend with regular LTE speeds instead, as while there is a 5G model of it, it's not as widely available.

Takeaway

There are quite a few Android tablets on the market, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7 Plus are definitely the ones to beat. The design, screens, battery life, and overall experience of using both is just beyond what we’ve come to expect on an Android tablet, and makes them both highly recommended.

You can of course up your productivity with each by pairing them with the keyboard cover for easier typing, and while the keys may not be exactly the same as typing on a laptop, they are still very responsive and easy to get used to.

So while it's not perfect as a laptop replacement, the Galaxy Tab S7 is certainly a competent tool for quick note-taking, drawing, or just lying in bed watching some Netflix - and with its bigger, better screen the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is even better for those things, but it also costs more, and is otherwise a very similar slate.

Xiaomi could be next in line to show off a foldable phone

Foldable phones remain challenging and expensive to make, but the number of manufacturers with a foldable in their smartphone range is slowly growing. Now there's new evidence that Xiaomi could be next in line with a launch.

Code spotted in Xiaomi's MIUI 12 by XDA Developers strongly suggests that the groundwork is being laid for a foldable device codenamed Cetus – folding capabilities are mentioned numerous times in relation to the device display.

The code reveals that we're looking at a phone running MIUI on top of Android 11, carrying a 108MP primary camera, and running some kind of Snapdragon processor (most probably a high-end model).

No other information about the phone is revealed – there's nothing about its size or its release date – but it's one of the biggest hints we've seen so far that Xiaomi has a foldable phone on the way, and it could be arriving at some point next year.

If Xiaomi does have a foldable phone in the pipeline, it wouldn't be much of a surprise: we've been hearing rumors about such a device from the Chinese electronics giant for almost two years at this point.

Rumors or not, Xiaomi is a company that likes to stay at the forefront of smartphone innovation, and it won't want the likes of Samsung, Huawei and Motorola getting too much of a head start when it comes to developing foldables.

Earlier this year there was some activity around Xiaomi patents for a device with a screen that bends, and in terms of the device design it had the look of a Huawei Mate Xs – which may or may not be what the finished smartphone ends up looking like.

But what happens if you’re also keeping an eye on a BBQ? Or just want a little fresh air? An outdoor TV can solve all of these issues – and we certainly wouldn’t blame you for wanting one.

An outdoor TV is also a great way to entertain guests – and in a world of quarantine and isolation, it may be the only way to safely watch TV with a friend or two without getting too close and being inside together.

No matter the reason for considering an outdoor TV, there are a few things you should know before you pull the trigger.

Should I buy an outdoor TV?

There are plenty of reasons to consider buying an outdoor TV. Perhaps you’re setting up an outdoor entertainment area, and need something to tie it together. Or, maybe you want to make sure you don’t miss the game while you’re cooking on a patio grill.

In any case, it’s important to set expectations and make sure you find the best bang for your buck. Indoor TVs are getting better and better – thanks to technology like OLED, HDR, and high resolutions like 4K. Thankfully, outdoor TVs aren’t missing out on that, but the latest technology is a little slower to show up on these outdoor TVs than it is indoor ones. The ones that do have this tech are often more expensive than indoor options too.

Having said that, if you don’t mind spending a little extra cash to get the right product, and feel that an outdoor TV would complete your outdoor setup, then it may be worth buying one.

Is it safe to put a TV outdoors?

There are two main issues to consider when buying a TV for outdoor use -- weather, and security. Let’s start with weather.

There are a few ways to ensure that your TV doesn’t get damaged in bad weather. The first way to do so is to buy a TV that was designed and built to be used outside. These TVs usually have some kind of weather-proofing, and a display that is bright enough to offer a good image even in direct sunlight – but are often bulkier and more expensive than their indoor counterparts.

The other option is you buy a regular TV, but keep it in a weather-proof case that you close up when you’re not using the TV. In this situation, you’ll have to ensure that you’re not using the TV when it’s raining or snowing, and this probably isn’t the best option for areas where it gets really cold or really hot. The advantage to this, however, is that you can spend less on a TV -- and in some situations, it may look better too.

Ultimately, if you can afford doing so we recommend buying a TV that was designed for outdoor use. This ensures that even if the weather gets a little crazy, your TV should remain perfectly fine – and you don’t have to worry about perfectly sealing up your TV when you’re not using it. That’s true even under a covered patio. There are other risks besides rain – such as insects, temperature variation, and so on.

The other main issue is security. It’s a good idea to ensure that the area you keep your outdoor TV is as hidden as possible from passers-by. And, it’s also a good idea to have a security camera set up outside in case something does happen. Of course, you should also make sure that your TV is properly bolted into a wall, rather than just having it on a stand like you might inside.

What does an outdoor TV cost?

If you want to put a TV outdoors, you’re going to have to pay up a little. If you buy an actual purpose-built TV, you’re looking at around $1,000 on the low-end, and around $3,000 for a mid range option.

If you want to save cash, buying a standard TV and outdoor TV cabinet may be the way to go, considering you could buy a normal TV for a relatively small amount, and a cabinet for not much more. All in, you should be able to put together a solution for well under the cost of a dedicated outdoor TV.

Trump and Biden official election apps vulnerable to hackers

The official 2020 election apps of both President Trump and Joe Biden feature significant security issues, researchers have claimed.

With the US Presidential election now just a few days away, doubts have been raised over the security of the official apps used by both candidates by researchers at security firm Promon.

The company found that both the Trump and Biden apps are vulnerable to StrandHogg, a well-known and critical Android vulnerability that allows hackers to easily hijack apps and overlay fake screens which can depict anything the attacker wants, including screens that ask the user to hand over sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords.

Election apps hacked

The news comes despite President Trump recently declaring at a campaign rally that, "Nobody gets hacked. To get hacked you need somebody with 197 IQ and he needs about 15% of your password”.

Promon was able to use StrandHogg to overlay fake screens - one on Trump’s app, calling on users to donate to the Biden campaign, and another on official the Biden app, showing the Democratic candidate in a MAGA hat, urging users to vote for Trump.

“The President’s statement sadly reflects a widely believed sentiment that secure passwords will protect you from hackers and that hacking, in general, doesn’t affect the average citizen," noted Tom Lysemose Hansen, CTO at Promon.

"Sadly, this isn’t the case. Absolutely nothing is “unhackable” and even the most secure, high profile accounts are vulnerable should the user fall victim to a phishing attack which seeks usernames and passwords."

The report comes shortly after the official Trump re-election campaign in the state of Wisconsin said it had lost $2.3 million to hackers who carried out a phishing attack.

Theories suggest Micromax might be rebranding Huawei phones for India

Update (November 1): Micromax showed off the phones, debunking the correlation between In Mobiles and Huawei/Honor. The original story has been retained below, but it no longer holds true.

Micromax is set to make a big return to the Indian smartphone market next week, with the launch of the new ‘In’ series of smartphones. While we await more details around its specs and pricing, conspiracy theorists think that the company will be rebadging Honor phones this time.

Earlier this year, Micromax announced that it will resume selling smartphones in India. Eventual developments confirmed that this return will happen under a new umbrella — In Mobiles. On November 3, two budget devices will be launched in the sub Rs 15,000 segment, powered by the gaming-centric MediaTek Helio G25 and the G35 chipsets. The rest of the specifications are yet to be officially confirmed.

In the usual pre-launch buzz campaigns, the company shared another teaser which shows a part of the back of the phone: a glossy panel with an X-shaped pattern that shines according to the light hitting it. Twitter users were quick to point out how familiar this design characteristic was to the Honor 9X which was launched a few months ago. This snowballed into a cloud of doubt over Micromax’s operations.

Micromax has always prided itself in being an Indian smartphone brand. However, many of its phones were actually just rebranded devices from smaller Chinese OEMs. These manufacturers would supply the base hardware, while Micromax would take care of the software and after-sales service. Many believe that Micromax might be up to something similar with its 2020 return unless it is ready to invest hundreds of crores and take care of the entire supply chain itself.

It’s no secret that Honor and Huawei have had a tough last few months, withdrawing from many markets and slowing down in others. Getting rid of any excess inventory in this way might not be the worst idea in that sense. Of course, it is too early to tell if that is actually the case or just coincidence.

If it is true, this wouldn’t be the first partnership between the two brands. Back in July 2019, Huawei announced a strategic partnership with Micromax to use its extensive retailer network across India as a destination for sales and service.

We suggest you take this with a grain of salt as there is no real evidence suggesting a bigger partnership between the two companies. We should get a lot more clarity next week.
